Review: Batman #28 The War of Jokes and Riddles, Part 3

Gotham City experiences more than its fair share of terror as The Joker and The Riddler continue to do battle with each other in part three of The War of Jokes and Riddles. The story, written by Tom King, who knows a thing or 50 about writing epic Batman stories, has continued to grow into a classic tale pitting two of The Dark Knight definitive foes against one another as the caped crusader is left standing on the sideline trying as best he can to keep the citizens of his beloved city from being caught in the crossfire.

The goal of keeping this battles contained seems to be working, until each of the criminal masterminds decide to send a sniper to take out Batman. If having a city divided by warring criminal gangs was not bad enough, they now have to contend with a daily battle between two of the most feared sharp-shooters of all time.

Tom King continues to bring his razor-sharp writing to the Batman series that he should be very familiar with by now. His stories in this book have been top notch, but this most recent arc has truly elevated what has been great writing, into the category of excellent.

Artistic team Mikel Janin (artist), and June Chung (colors) provide classic Gotham stylings to the book and a solid foundation for the story to unfold. Normally steeped in darkness, the ongoing sniper battle in this issue provides a respite for this team to provide a brighter element to some of the pages and use more vibrant colors than you would usually associate with a book centered around Batman.

Overall, I really like this book. The story has been solid through the first three issues, and my excitement is already building for the fourth. When Batman and the GCPD make their move on The Joker and The Riddler, chaos will ensue, and we will all be the better for it.
