REVIEW: Black Panther #3

In this week’s Black Panther #3, the “A Nation Under Our Feet” arc returns readers to the volatile situation brewing in Wakanda. As the panther king struggles with the unrest in his nation and those responsible for it, elsewhere the Midnight Angels continue their liberation quest and make a decision that will further strengthen their position. More time is spent unraveling Shuri’s fate after defending Wakanda against Thanos and the Black Order. T’Challa once again tracks down his new adversaries and enters into an altercation that shows him just how difficult an opponent he is up against.

Ta-Nehisi Coates and Brian Stelfreeze continue to bring Wakanda to life in this third installment. A large focus is placed on the history of Wakanda, but shown from different perspectives through different character’s motivations. By scattering the various story lines across Wakanda, Coates and Stelfreeze creatively layout for readers how large the nation is and how different each area and their people are. While Coates and Stelfreeze continue to knock it out of the park in Black Panther #3, it’s Laura Martin’s colors that are the real star in this issue. My personal favorite pages in the issue are those that are dedicated to Shuri’s story line. The tones used to differentiate between Shuri’s story and the rest of the issue are simply beautiful. I read through the issue twice and found myself flipping back to those pages in both instances.

FINAL VERDICT: Coates, Stelfreeze and Martin continue to strengthen the legacy of the Black Panther, while educating readers on the history of Wakanda and it’s people. Readers continue to prosper from the obvious care for detail and effort being put into this book. Whether you are a longtime Black Panther fan or just had your first taste in Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War movie, you will enjoy exploring the nation he rules.
