REVIEW: Four Norsemen of the Apocalypse #1

Let’s judge this book by its cover… Vikings, fighter jets and knickers all catch the eye in this stunningly coloured cover that looks like a painting. The detail and care taken is outstanding, one of the best covers I’ve seen in a long while.

Bendix Falk is a fighter pilot and sex pest heading out for his tour overseas but not before he beds more than his fair share of the ladies. Unbeknownst to him this will be his last tour as he is quickly killed in a flaming crash that somehow still manages to save the day. Having not lived a good enough life to ascend to the heavens like his co pilot who is whisked away by an Angel he’s left standing face to face with a demon ready to take him to hell for being a major douche, when lo and behold a Valkyrie on a Harley shows up to save his ass and take him to Valhalla where he will eat meat, drink mead and fight for all of eternity, even if eternity will be ending very soon if the gods have anything to say about it. It’s up to Bendix and his rag-tag pals to try to stop the true death and the end of everything all while trying to get laid along the way.

From the first page narrated by God himself I knew I was going to like this book, the fact that God pats himself on the back throughout for creating everything and being a complete know it all made it very amusing to read. Gods take on religious beliefs and how they started and why he doesn’t care made me laugh out loud, explaining the beginning and the wonders that he takes full credit for and won’t let you hear the end of it is fantastic.

The story is fluid and continues at an even pace with no lagging parts to bore you, some pages seem a little muddled, page 43 gets repeated on page 45 but that’s an editing/printing problem, the text from page 89 is repeated on new art on page 90, letterers fault, no idea who that is as their name and the names of a few others are missing from the credit page…anyhoo, back to the book. The art is great all the way through and the origin pages of the team are drawn in the retro style of 80’s comics and look great. It’s hard to find anything not to like in this book, the violence, nudity and bad language are never over used or done just for shock value and the characters are all likable in their own ways. At 171 pages it might seem long but once you start you won’t want to put it down, I didn’t and now I’m wanting more. If God is true to his word and can be bothered there will be three more books to follow.

This is easily a 5 star book. But then I’m sure God already knew what score I was going to give it. Asshat

Hey, I'm Shane.
Been into comics since I was about 5. Loved watching Wonder Woman and superboy in the 80's.
I Started reading seriously about 10 years ago. Began to collect a few comic series, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Teen Titans, Justice League of America and Superman Batman all pre flashpoint. Being honest that was my favourite run.
