REVIEW: Grimm Tales of Terror Vol 2: #1
A welcome return to Zenescopes one shot style offerings of classic tales re-done with a Grimm twist. The new volume kicks off with their version of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, this time transplanted into a Peter Parker-esque high school environment. By now everyone should know the tale, a doctor takes a potion that turns him into a monster. This being Grimm, there is more to it than that.
Written by Ralph Tedesco, the story moves along at a decent pace, with believable dialogue for the stereotypical characters. The cliché element isn’t necessarily a problem that Tedesco should worry about, after all its high school; we have seen it all before in Archie and Spider-Man books and in shows like Smallville. Where Tedesco excels is in the setup and the payoff.
Eric J handles the art with a style, that like the scenario in which it is set, we have seen before. I think I have mentioned on previous reviews, that some of the lesser publishers tend to work on a “house” style. It’s kind of like they know what has worked in the past, so they ride their horses accordingly. Sometimes however a change up can be a show stopper. Eric J’s works isn’t bad in shape way or form, but I would like to see more variety in the Zenescope style. Colors are provided by Fran Gamboa and J.C. Ruiz who demonstrates a seemingly technicolour scheme.
Tales of Terror is an entertaining read. I have been quietly impressed with the consistency of quality around Grimm books, both in the one shot books and the ongoing series and mini series. With this being a one shot, it is a great opportunity to look at their work with the safety of having the classic tale with which to compare.
