REVIEW: Rat Queens #11

Rat Queens #11
Writer – Kurtis J. Wiebe
Artist – Tess Fowler
Letters – Ed Brisson
Colours – Tamra Bonvillain (what a great name, sounds like Bond Villain)
Cover Art – Stjepan Sejic

Let’s judge this book by its cover… Lord of the rings meets Harry Potter looking cover. It’s drawn well to show that each character has a different personality.

The facts are these… No recap page. However several characters reference things that have happened so you never feel too lost.

If you’re sitting comfortably we can begin… Gerard is meeting with the Council of Nine. The head honchos at the Mage university. The Council has been banning ancient texts along with ending and banning numerous other things from the school and this doesn’t sit well with Gerard. A fight ensues between the Council and an entourage of witches lead by Gerard. In a snowy mountain our Rat Queens are in a cage as Goblins prepare to eat them all in a delicious soup. Tricking the Goblins into eating some poison candies the girls manage to escape, fighting their way through the rest with swords and sorcery. The girls head to a tavern for some much deserved drinking and debauchery as this tavern has a reputation for excess in both. Inside they see the tavern has fallen victim to same restrictions as the school. They don’t let that stop them as they drink and laugh. The youngest of the girls Betty falls asleep so Dee takes to her room and leaves her alone when she is attacked by a masked imp claiming to now have the last of the five monkeys. To be continued.

I have to be honest I didn’t think I would enjoy this book half as much as I did. Even the beginning few pages didn’t spark my interest. But once the girls showed up it became a hoot. It’s funny, it’s really funny. The interaction between the girls is spot on. We have innocent looking imp sized Betty who is always happy and smiling. The bearded woman Violet who says “if you know what I mean” then tells you what she means. Dee the badass armoured sword weirder with the heart of gold And finally Hannah the daughter of Gerard who has the mouth of a trucker with an attitude to match and magic to back it up. The four work so well together. I really liked it. Add to that the great art work and this book is a winner.

You kiss your mother with that mouth… There is a fair bit of swearing in this book. Definitely not one for kiddies. It’s not over the top or out of context. It fits in the situations they’re in.

That’s gonna leave a mark… Violence a plenty from Goblins melting after eating the poison candy to having their heads cut off as the girls escape.

Bow chicka wow wow… Although there is not any actual sex in this book the girls do speak of hot sex in the loo and getting it good from their men. It’s very funny.

The Good, the Bad and the Star rating…
The good – The art, the characters and the brilliantly funny writing.
The bad – First few pages seemed out of place. They could have been in a previous issue.
The stars – This is going in my 5 star hall of fame. I don’t hand out 5’s very often but this one deserves it.

Hey, I'm Shane.
Been into comics since I was about 5. Loved watching Wonder Woman and superboy in the 80's.
I Started reading seriously about 10 years ago. Began to collect a few comic series, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Teen Titans, Justice League of America and Superman Batman all pre flashpoint. Being honest that was my favourite run.
