REVIEW: The Private Eye Deluxe Edition Hardcover

Story: Brian K. Vaughan
Art: Marcos Martin
Colors: Muntsa Vicente
Publisher: Image Comics
Release Date: December 2, 2015

Back in 2013, Brian K. Vaughan and Marcos Martin surprised the comic world with the announcement of their collaboration on a new web comic which would follow a “pay what you want” structure. This week, Image Comics brings us a deluxe hardcover collection of the complete story.

Overall, this collected edition comes in at around 300 pages. However only about 3/4 of the book is the actual story. Those purchasing this deluxe edition are treated to a wealth of supplemental material in the back of the book. Readers are treated to character and architectural concept designs, parts of the actual script and even even email correspondences between Brian K. Vaughan and Marcos Martin as the idea came to life.

FINAL VERDICT: If you followed the web comic as chapters were released and enjoyed the story, then this is a MUST HAVE. If you are an overall fan of this creative team, you won’t be disappointed. If you didn’t have a chance to read this one as it was coming out, this is the perfect way to get in on the party. I also think this story reads better as a collected version, so if this is your first go, you actually lucked out.
