REVIEW: Wrestlers In Space #1

By Nathanael Hopkins-Smith & Francesco Chiappara

I am old enough to remember the original run of The Muppet Show. One of my favourite sketches was Pigs in Space. I have to admit I had no idea what the frak was ever going on. That’s not a problem that is going to happen here.

The Matador, loved by many who seems to have many to love, falls _20160124_123256afoul of the furious hell of a scorned woman. Cursed with a somewhat life changing event he is off to join a circus of sorts. That is only part of the story as we also meet the aliens which will no doubt bring the space element to the book.

Created by up and coming Australian writer Nathanael Hopkins-Smith; the book is a far cry from his previous book, The Vagabond; that being a dark book of vengeance and Wrestlers being a humour book. That is neither a good or a bad thing, it’s just different. Hopkins-Smith has created a totally different and viable world, which is filled with characters that should make you smile, despite the some of the familiar tropes in play.

Francesco “Prenzy” Chiapparais on art duties, with a look that reminds me of Mike Wieringo in places and Rick Leonardi in others. The whole does work as we get larger than life characters  which gives the idea of fun, whichever is backed up by Hopkins-Smith script.  The colors by Simon A. Wright are functional with a day goo effect for the most part.

Wrestlers is a great example of how creators shouldn’t be allowed to be pigeon-holed as one type of genre writer/ artist. Here, we have A writer looking to develop his skill whilst allowing us the reader, to come along for the ride.

I am a long time comic book fan, being first introduced to Batman in the mid to late 70's. This led to a appreciation of classic artists like Neal Adams and Jim Aparo. Moving through the decades that followed, I have a working knowledge of a huge raft of characters with a fondness for old school characters like JSA and The Shadow

Currently reading a slew of Bat Books, enjoying a mini Marvel revival, and the host of The Definative Crusade and Outside the Panels whilst also appearing on No-Prize Podcast on the Undercover Capes Podcast Network
