REVIEW: 30 Days of Night # 4
Synopsis:
Stella Olemaun, the newly appointed Sheriff, has just killed the mysterious stranger that killed her husband. She thinks that her problems are now over. She is so wrong! The power is out, The snow machines are broken, and then there’s the little thing about a horde of vampires gathering on the outskirts of town. And they’re hungry! This issue opens with the vampires looking down on the town in which they wish to find their “lunch.” In town, Martha Conner is leaving her husband, who promises to stop drinking but to no avail. Martha has packed and walks out the door. Not a good time to do so.
The Creative Team:
Steve Niles builds the suspense in this issue to a horrific tone. We see a town helpless before this group of vampires to which we see them show no mercy as they feed. If things continue as they’re going, the town will probably be wiped out by Sundown. It’s the same feeling of helplessness and hopelessness as we felt for the characters in the Titty Twister during From Dusk til Dawn. We get a distinct feeling of dread as the vampires move casually through town and feed off of whomever they please. Great stuff includes a child out in the cold looking for help that turns out to be one of the undead and A sense of overconfidence by the Nosferatu themselves.
Piotr Kowalski ups the dread factor in great style and his panels along with Brad Simpsons color scheme brings the feeling of cold, dark aloneness to life as only it can happen in a 30 Day’s of Night comic book. Along with the dread factor, they really turn up the gore factor as well. This issue will please the fans of the first movie as it shows no compromise vampires doing what they do best. Highlights include the attack on Martha Conner and the splash of the head vampire imploring his followers to “…go and feed until you can feed no more!”
In Conclusion:
The body count is mounting and the town folk have no idea what to do ta abate it. Can these vampires be killed? There is seemingly no stopping this blood thirsty clan as they invoke all out war against this tiny little hamlet. The reader will be drawn into the situation as they wonder how it will end. An all out victory for the vampires or will the humans finally figure out a way to stop them. There is a great twist at the end as the head vampire… to be continued! ***1/2 stars (8.5 rating)
