Advance Review: Dominatrix-Hellbent in Heels-Lesson 1 of 3

Dominique is a strong, independent female lead who works for herself, and also happens to help stop underground crime syndicates in her spare time. Her role as Dominatrix, allows her the opportunity to meet all kinds of people. People like Doug, who got her involved in her secret life of toppling international crime organizations.

Although this is not a new character, she is someone I“ve just been introduced to. The first issue of the upcoming three-part series Hellbent in Heels, (Arcana Studio) has been a nice introduction to Dominatrix. Knowing she was brought to life by the mind of Gene Simmons (yes, the bass playing, fire-breathing, demon from the rock band Kiss) piqued my curiosity and compelled me to dive in. I“m glad I did.
The story introduces us to the main characters of Dominique and Doug. Newbies, such as myself, are able to follow along quite well without feeling lost. We find Doug surprise our heroine at home, and try to convince her to assist him on a mission to Hawaii. The job is to find one of Doug“s associates who has suddenly gone silent and finish the work that he had started. Both he and Dominique find themselves mixed up with an arms dealer who, seems to be branching out into a completely new type of weapon.

The talent of writer Erik Hendrix is evident. The story moves at a good, fast pace and never lost my interest. It just seems to have a natural flow to it and the dialogue flows quite smoothly. I was pleasantly surprised by the fact there is a really good comic book story being told here. Upon first look, and simply by reading the name Dominatrix across the cover, my fear was this would be an exploitative smutty comic, but that could not be further from the truth. There has truly been some very good character development and quite a bit of time building the world we“re reading about.

Similarly, the art of Kewber Baal and the coloring of Chandran Ponnusamy fit together quite well and complete this issue nicely. The panel layout throughout is playful and fun.

Dominatrix will kick your ass, and make you want to pay for the pleasure of having her do so. The book, while for mature readers, never loses site of the fact it is a comic and reminds me of younger days, when I was fascinated by titles such as Heavy Metal. Action, without sacrificing a good story is what you will receive from this title.
