Advance Review: SMOOVE CITY SC OGN

Smoove City | Book by Kenny Keil | Official Publisher Page | Simon & SchusterWith the 1990s now three decades behind us, many former 90s kids are becoming 21st-century moms and dads. And as they navigate their way through parenthood, they may find themselves looking back at some of the,  questionable choices they made.  Here to remind them is Smoove City by Kenny Reil.

Smoove City captures subtly what I have always thought, that the ’90s was the most exciting era. The 90’s pop culture gave birth to the iconic fashion shows, television shows and sitcoms, different genres of life-changing music, entertaining sporting activities, blockbuster movies, and video games.

Even though girl-bands dominated the 90’s pop culture, Smoove City is about a semi-ambitious boy band.  A group of four friends, who try to be a successful R&B boyband in the music business, going through difficult phases to finally get to their goals.  The reader is ushered around the country through the various locations and subcultures, and we get to see the 90’s through the eyes of the four friends.  What would life be without friends?  Almost like a 90’s type sitcom revolves around Music, friendship, dating, and all the little subcultures in between.

This comic is aimed for kids of the 90’s, and if you were a 90’s kid, and say you didn’t like this book, I call you a liar and a self-hating weirdo.  I did turn sour around the time that everything started to go well.  It was a little to 90’s for me.  Now I I am left wondering what happened to them.  Hopefully there will be a follow-up.

4 out of 5 stars.
