REVIEW: Spell On Wheels #1

It is most fitting that Spell on Wheels #1 is releasing in October, a perfect month for a book about modern-day witches. I mean, fitting for the normies, us cool kids know that witches are an all year thing.

The story revolves around three witches who are robbed of an assortment of their magical items, and we all know that just won“t fly. Kate Leth“s writing moves the story along at a perfect pace while still taking appropriate timing to get little details in. You get a good amount of information about each witch, and while the characters have some classic witchy attributes, there“s a lot of foreshadowing and evidence of what it to come in later issues.

Megan Levens serves as the artist for this series, and though her style is what I like to call “all ages appropriate”“, it“s detailed. Also what is instantly clear is her ability to draw different body types and ethnicities, which I believe in a vastly important skill for an artist to have. I know we have all seen the “just stick a different head on her”“ guy that can only do one trick, but you won“t find any of that tackiness here. Marissa Louise pairs perfectly with her bright and engaging color palette, and it feels interesting without gimmicks.

The witches themselves are likeable, and I identify personally with Jolene. Can“t imagine why. There“s endless types of media on witches, and it“s not like we haven“t seen them in comics before. But Spell on Wheels is a book that I supremely enjoyed, and will be adding to my pull file. I really am interested in seeing where the book goes, and learning more about each of the witches. Ming Doyle“s cover art just further knocked it out of the candy store, and I will be adding every single issue to my personal collection as long as the covers keep coming out great.

I do also like that the entire team working on this book seems very cohesive, and sometimes it“s just so obvious when a book is thrown together from sources that are not united. But an all female team working on a book about lady witches seems like a dream come true, and I“m very pleased to say it“s working out amazingly in their favor.
