Review: Invaders #2

“War has no place for kindness.” – Prince Namor

Synopsis:

Gotta love a comic that starts in my home state of Maine! This one begins at the home of Randall and Nay Peterson. World War 2 may be over but there are still things nagging at our heroes. Jim Hammond realizes that his good friend is lying to him and he’s determined to get to the bottom of as to why and the Sub Mariner seems to be bent on starting a war with the surface world. Captain America is desperately trying to dissuade him from this decision. Namor is bent on traveling to Maine, but wants to line up his new Atlantean military and show them their new home first.

The Creative Team:

Chip Zdarsky is doing a great job linking our heroes war-time service to their post war activities. We truly get the feeling that even though the war is over, our heroes battles have just begun. The original human torch is just discovering that Namor met with Professor X before the Professor founded his uncanny X-Men. This revelation and the mystery surrounding it keeps the reader glued to every page. We want to know what happened when Namor met the Prof. Especially since we were all under the impression that Namor was an amnesiac until the new Human Torch, Johnny Storm, discovered him in a flop house. Great stuff includes Namor’s anger at a General during Steve Rodgers funeral. Also, What Bucky found in the undersea kingdom.

Magno and Guice do an excellent job conveying the beloved Marvel characters. The feel is somewhat noir mixed with spy thriller and espionage. Some of my favorite themes in entertainment and this is some of the best art I’ve seen in a Marvel comic book in a long time. I really enjoyed his kind of darkened underground look that they gave the city of Atlantis. Highlights include the splash where Cap enters the undersea city and the rainy flashback to World War 2 Germany.

In Conclusion:

They really don’t write ’em like this anymore. It takes a strong talent to put a fresh spin on old material without deviating from the source material and our creative team does it with flying colors. I never thought an Invaders title, which I only slightly enjoyed during the original run, could catch my attention and hold it like this has. Our heroes battle inner conflict as well as an outward enemy and we’re left wanting more as this story progresses. Loyalties will be tested and friendships strained, perhaps to the point of no return. We can see the motivation for each character and this makes for a compelling issue as the inevitability of war seems to loom! **** 8.8 rating
