Review: Jeepers Creepers #4

Synopsis:

This issue opens with a ten(?) year old boy playing with toy soldiers, ya know, the tiny plastic ones that are all green and come in bags of 24 for a dollar (well, that’s what they cost when I played with them.) The narration lets us know that this young boy loved his monster movies, so much he wishes monsters were real! You know what they say; Be careful what you ask for (do I really need to finish this cliche?) Then we cut to our protagonist as an adult and he’s in trouble!

The Creative Team:

Marc Andreyko wastes no time putting our hero in peril, he’s battling demons by page 2! After losing his footing, he falls down an old mine shaft and the trouble escalates from there. He turns on his phone flashlight in an attempt to find his way back to the surface. We flashback yet again to 1962. A group of miners is walking along the same shaft. Their leader is a miner named George and he’s determined that there’s something of value in this mine so, despite the doubts of at least one follower, he continues to lead them through a hole in the wall, hoping to find gold instead, he finds a horrific scene none of them were ready for! It’s another great anthology from the leaders in modern horror anthologies, of course, we’re taking about Dynamite! Great stuff includes the mystery of the mineshaft itself and our protagonists promise to God if he gets out of danger. It’s a promise that most of us can relate to because we’ve all done it before (but most of us fail to live up to said promise when our conflict is done. lol)

The ever-reliable Kewber Baal has done it again. His panels are over the top as we’d expect in a Dynamite horror tale, whether he’s drawing Ash Williams (one of my favorite artists to take on an Evil Dead/Army of Darkness tale for any company) or a stand-alone like it seems we have here. His monsters are scary and his close-ups send chills down the spines of readers. Highlights include the room just beyond the mine shaft and what the shaft hides (not to be revealed here, of course.)

In Conclusion:

Fans who miss shows like Tales from the Darkside and Tales from the Crypt can take solace that their appetite for good horror anthologies is still being met and Dynamite is the leader in publishing these macabre moments. Even when they’re mini stories within a larger frame like here. I don’t know anyone else who is publishing horror anthologies on a consistent basis. One reason is probably that they know they can’t hold a candle to the kings of the genre! Our hero makes it out of the mine shaft and to his car, so this is a one-shot, right? That’s what you think lol! To be continued. (7.9)
