Comic Book Review – Star Wars # 63

Synopsis:

The Scourging of Shu-Torun is underway as our heroes led by Princess Leia have a plan to oppose the tyrants. Queen Trios has betrayed the alliance allowing the Empire to launch an attack on the rebels. They survived this attack and are ready to confront the Evil Empire and retaliate. This issue opens with the Queen discussing a victory party with Commander Kanchar, who says he won’t be able to attend.

The Creative Team:

Kieron Gillen brings us a Queen that’s conflicted. Leia was her friend and she felt it necessary to betray her. It was her duty, even though she’s not proud of what she’s done. This is a queen that is a three dimensional character and is well written which gives the reader a reason to empathize with her, which makes for compelling conflict. Then we cut to our heroes putting their plan into gear and the pulse pounding pages deliver. Some great action from the iconic characters. Gillen gets these characters right. The banter between Han and Leia is what we’ve come to expect and it’s good to see the classic three in action together. Something we haven’t seen since “A New Hope” since Hollywood likes to send them in different directions until the end of the story. Great stuff includes the revelation as to what makes Shu-Torun work the way it does and watching Leia’s plan unfold.

Angel Unzueta does a terrific job capturing the likenesses of our classic heroes. Her attention to detail in the likeness of the ships and characters pays off in a big way. It’s fun to watch the characters come to life in a realistic way, a lot of Star Wars artists are going for a simplistic, almost cartoony depiction of the characters. It’s refreshing to see some great art in the world of Star Wars. Highlights include the splash of the first appearance of the Spike and Princess Leia going into battle.

In Conclusion:

All the action Star Wars fans crave and then some. It’s an awesome ride and more fun than a Wookie should be allowed. A thoroughly satisfying read that should be in the library of any classic Star Wars fan. Just when you didn’t think it could get any better, we come full circle as…to be continued. 8.4 a/k/a 3/5
