Every superhero needs a nemesis, and many comic book villains are just as appealing as the good guys. But which supervillains do we love to hate the most? Here“s our selection of the top five.
 The JokerÂ
Maybe you have a comic book villain that you personally love to hate more than The Joker, but it should go without saying that he is generally more loved than any other baddie from the world of comic books; partially helped by his portrayals on the big screen by Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and Joaquin Phoenix.
 The Joker made his first appearance in the debut issue of the Batman comic in 1940. The clown-faced criminal mastermind was introduced as a psychopath with a sadistic sense of humor, but during the 1950s, he became more of a goofy prankster. Thankfully, the character“s darker side was explored more in the 1970s, and he became the beloved psychotic we now know and love. One of the great things about The Joker is he has no clear motives or agenda. He simply wants to cause as much chaos as possible. Neither does The Joker possess any superpowers. Instead, he relies on chemical concoctions and thematic weapons like lapel flowers that spray acid and razor-tipped playing cards. MagnetoÂ
Thanks to the X-Men franchise of movies, surely everyone now knows who Magneto is. But long before Ian McKellen played him on the silver screen, Magneto was regarded as one of the most-loved comic book villains of all time. The powerful mutant was born with the ability to generate and control magnetic fields, and he regards mutants as a superior species to humans. However, perhaps Magneto is so loved by comic book fans because it is easy to have empathy for him. Sometimes it is hard to see Magneto as a villain at all, as his actions are usually only to defend his people. Doctor DoomÂ
With one of the best villain names ever, Doctor Victor Von Doom first appeared in The Fantastic Four #5 comic book in 1962. Although he was initially the nemesis of the Fantastic Four superheroes, he went on to become an enemy of The Avengers as well. Even the likes of Reed Richards and Iron Man find it challenging to stop the sorcerer and technological genius Doctor Doom. The evil doctor“s origin story involves him being involved in an accident that blew up half of his face, scarring him forever.Â
The Green GoblinÂ
Out of Spiderman“s numerous enemies, surely the Green Goblin is the most unhinged and terrifying. Originally the alter-ego of Norman Osborn, the insane supervillain“s mantle was taken up by Norman“s son Harry, Peter Parker“s best friend. With weapons like explosive pumpkins, razor boomerangs, and the infamous goblin glider, he is one of the most unstoppable enemies Spidey has ever encountered.Â
ElektraÂ
Perhaps comic book fans do not love to hate Elektra in the same way they do other villains on this list. After all, she does do some good. But for every good deed Elektra does, she must surely do ten evil things. The beautiful Greek assassin, who is also a love interest of Daredevil, has made numerous appearances in Marvel comics, battling against the likes of Spiderman and Wolverine. With her violent nature and mercenary lifestyle, Elektra is a character to both love and hate, and she is probably the greatest female comic book villain of all time.
