This past weekend, the annual Garden State Comic Fest opened it’s doors to comic fans of all ages. Attendance was strong, but could the show handle the crowd???

Pre-Show:

The show organizers can never be accused of not doing their best to get the word out about the show. On top of a heavy social media presence and consistent flow of updates, the show organizers have advertised at numerous local comic events since last year’s show. Any questions that I asked prior to the show were answered within 24 hours. You really can’t ask for much more leading up to a show.

The Venue/Staff:

The Garden State Comic Fest returned to the Mennen Arena in Morristown, New Jersey. 2/3 of the building was occupied by the event as it doubled in size from last year. While number of creators attending the show seemed consistent with last year, there were far more vendors available to shoppers. Show organizers made the best of the added space and created a nice, comfortable shopping experience for attendees. The show volunteers were very friendly and the show organizers could be seen throughout the weekend speaking with guests, vendors and fans alike. A special shout out goes to the volunteers that worked outside the event assisting people prior to doors opening. Everyone was very professional and well organized.

Guest List:

This year’s show was headlined by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Co-Creator Kevin Eastman. The show organizers heavily promoted his appearance, and turtle fans did not miss the opportunity to meet Mr. Eastman. Other guest list highlights included Greg Hildebrandt, Walt & Louise Simonson, Adam Kubert, Jim Steranko, Lee Weeks and Rags Morales.

Exhibitors/Vendors:

With show expanding and dedicating the additional space to more vendors, fans were treated to a terrific shopping experience. There were comics available from $1 and up. There was a good balance of comics and toys for shoppers of all ages. And unlike some of the bigger shows, vendor prices were very reasonable.

Final Verdict:

The Garden State Comic Fest promised to come back this year bigger and better, than they surely delivered. Creators, fans and vendors all seemed to be enjoying the show. I surely did, and look forward to next year.
