Enchanting Retro 16-Bit Fantasy Adventure Aegis Defenders to Delight PlayStation®4 Owners in Winter 2017

Humble Bundle Published Metroidvania-style Action-Platformer Aegis Defenders Will Release on PlayStation®4 in Addition to Announced Windows PC and Mac Versions

Humble Bundle, Inc. — digital retailer of games, ebooks, software and more, where customers can donate to charity through popular pay-what-you-want bundle promotions and now a leading multi-platform games publisher — is thrilled to announce in partnership with independent developer GUTS Department the release of 16-bit styled action-platformer Aegis Defenders on PlayStation®4 this winter. Aegis Defenders — now coming to PlayStation®4 in addition to the previously announced Windows PC and Mac versions— is the latest game to be published through the recently announced multi-platform funding and creative initiative “Presented by Humble Bundle.”

Aegis Defenders is a Metroidvania-style action-platformer truly unlike any other game you’ve ever played. Borrowing tower defense combat elements, combined with the look, feel and scale of 16-bit era titles like Super MetroidAegis Defenders reignites the magic of the old school adventure genre for a unique blend of gameplay and rich narrative setting the stage for an instant classic.

In a world where control over once lost technologies equals power, you play as Ruinhunters Bart and his granddaughter Clu to explore ancient ruins and uncover the one thing that can save their world from the ruthless Empire: a legendary weapon known as Aegis. Bart, a machinist, specializes in building structures. Clu, on the other hand, is a skilled hunter and trapsmith. Together the two must wage war against corrupt beasts and the Empire to save the world, one realm at a time.

“Aegis Defenders is a love letter to classic adventure games that myself and many other members of GUTS grew up playing on the original PlayStation,” said Bryce Kho, Aegis Defenders’ Creative Director. Releasing our game on the PlayStation platform is a dream come true, and we’re honored to share space with some of the game industry’s most iconic titles.”

John Polson, Humble Bundle publishing lead, said, “Humble is incredibly proud of the team’s accomplishment, and we hope to continue to be the helping hand that guides independent developers and their must-play games like Aegis Defenders to as many gamers and across as many platforms as possible.”

Key Features:
  • Uncover a Gorgeous 16-bit World: Featuring 16-bit inspired sprite visuals, every detail in the world of Aegis is painstakingly hand-painted as a love letter to an era of games that includes classics such as Final Fantasy, Super Metroid and The Legend of Zelda.
  • Tower Defense Inspired Combat: Make use of Bart’s powerful defensive structures and Clu’s arsenal of firearms and traps in a fast-paced, flexible combat system that emphasizes a strong defense.
  • Dynamic Character Swapping: Switch between up to four characters at any time to utilize the best passive abilities of inactive characters just as effectively as active characters.
  • Cooperative and Tailored Gameplay: With drop-in/drop-out co-op, invite a friend in at any time to play the entire story campaign cooperatively.
Aegis Defenders developer GUTS Department is an independent studio operating out of Los Angeles, California. After a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2014 and the support of multiple game industry veterans — Kristen Kho (PopCap Games), Max Palazzo (Syndicate Atomic, Activision-Blizzard) and Mike Effenberger (Syndicate Atomic, Disney Interactive) — Aegis Defenders grew from a student project at the University of Southern California into a full-fledged production. As a “Presented by Humble Bundle” game, it has received additional publishing support.
Aegis Defenders will release for Windows PC and Mac in the fall on the Humble Store and Steam, and for PlayStation®4 this winter on the PlayStation® Store.
