G.I JOE: A Real American Hero #296
Story Thus far:
Cobra has been using a Casino as a front for the military operations. Mostly focused on resurrection operations in order to put together the most powerful deadliest Cobra army ever, consisting of Cobra classic villains! GI JOE is putting together a mission of their own in order hopefully stop them before it’s too late.
In the current issue of GI JOE A REAL AMERICAN HERO #296, the reader is dropped right in the middle of Cobra vs G.I JOE Firefight. What apparently was supposed to be a recon mission has turned into a siege with the Joe’s trying to fight their way out of an ambush in the middle of the Cobra Laboratory. Most importantly, it looks like Cobra was researching a way to resurrect Genghis Khan as a new member of Cobra and Serpentor.
Art:
The line work is impeccable…but, first let me give props to good work of the art creative team. Artist(s): SL Gallant; Colorist(s): J Brown; Ink(s) Mary Keane. I do appreciate the fact the team turns in quality professional work. The thing that turned me off was having to visualize the spacing. Perhaps a layout of the Casino would aided being able to visualize what’s happening during the firefight. That was when the field commander commands a flank to the left or right it actually means something.
The challenge in this book was displaying a fluid firefight between two teams, while also protecting the priority the collateral damage of the thing around them. My feeling is that they leaned a little too much on the letterer to explain away everything.
Speculation:
This issue will be a huge let down for anyone speculating on a new character. Does Gengis Khan even as a Serpentor even count? Anyways it might be better to swipe cheap copies of G.I JOES Issues from 1985.
Final Verdict:
SCORE: 2/5
The script is solid , once you get to the fighting. The issue was the Genghis Khan stuff which wasn’t needed.
