Interview with Brian Pulido, Creator of Lady Death

Coffin Comics have announced that a brand new Lady Death story entitled Chaos! Rules will debut as an exclusive Kickstarter campaign to be launched February 4, 2015.

This is Lady Death creator Brian Pulido“s first all new, original story to be published through Coffin Comics, his new publishing company.

Comic Crusaders had a chat with Pulido about his latest book and Lady Death herself.

Q: Lady Death has been an independent comics icon for many years now, what do you think owes to her success as a character?

BP: This is my best guess. Lady Death is an anti-hero. She doesn“t take shit from anyone. She gets pissed off easily. I think many of us look at her as a wish fulfillment character, whether it is her idealized beauty or attitude.

Q: Whilst she is an anti-hero, how do you think the character has evolved over the years?

BP: She“s had different chapters in her undead life. In the Chaos! Comics era, she became a goddess. In the Avatar / CR_06_color 2Boundless era, she quested in a medieval setting. In the upcoming era, she“s in a present day setting, she is confident in her abilities, and quite a master manipulator.

Q: What can readers expect from this new series, is this a perfect jumping on point for new readers and old?

BP: This is a new chapter in Lady Death“s life and a great jumping on point. In Chaos Rules #1, Lady Death is awakened from a 20-year, spell-induced slumber, she finds herself in the fiery pits of Hell. Two decades of her life, gone ”“”“ nothing more than nightmares. Who among her depraved enemies is responsible? How long until she exacts bloody vengeance? Not long!!! This is the first new Lady Death comic I“ve personally published in 12 years. This story ”“”“ chock full of sex, violence, and very bad behavior ”“”“ is Lady Death, fully realized.

Q: Based on that it sounds like Lady Death is getting back to her bad-ass roots which made many fall in love with her in the first place. How does it feel to be writing the character again? And have you approached this any differently than you would have done in the past?

BP: It feels amazing to write and be completely immersed in presenting her. Not only do I write the story, I work with the artist on layouts, I provide character designs, the whole enchilada.

My approach is different. In the past, Lady Death would take quite an ass kicking, then come back and exact revenge. In Chaos Rules, Lady Death is at the top of her craft. There is no doubt she is kicking ass. The question becomes how will she kick ass.

Additionally, the setting is entirely new. We are in the present day and in present day Hell. She“s spent the past decade of stories in 1351 AD.

Q: Looking at your body of work I can see that most of your work is within CR_07_colorthe horror genre, what is it that draws you to these types of stories?

BP: My mom got me started watching horror movies. I remember seeing “Night of The Living Dead”“ at the drive-in the weekend it opened. The impact was immediate. Horror has been in my blood ever since.

I“m attracted to the genre because it is taboo. The rebel spirit of rock n roll, especially metal and punk, also heavily influences me.

Q: The art shown in the previews looks absolutely stunning, as a writer, what do you look for in an artist when creating a comic?

BP: Thank you. For the next chapter is Lady Death“s undead life, I wanted a lush, European graphic novel quality to the work. I“ve been blessed to work with terrific talent on Lady Death like Steven Hughes, Mike Deodato Jr, Ivan Reis, Richard Ortiz and now Dheeraj Veerma. What they have in common is the ability to realize the female form with sensuality, elegance and respect. They are also consummate storytellers and conceptual designers who can take text on a page and make it come to life.

Q: Picking up on the theme of storytelling, having directed films such as “The Graves”“ creatively, how do you approach a film differently from a comic and how does this differ when sitting down to write in either of the two mediums?

BP: There are big differences between the two, the most obvious being budget. In a comic book story, your budget can be limitless and you have very few constraints. In movies, no matter the scale, you work inside a budget.

Q: Where can we find the book to help back it on Kickstarter?

BP: The Kickstarter goes live on February 4th. In the meantime, we are posting updates on www.LadyDeathUniverse.com
