Kickstarter Alert: ModPod – A Portable Modular Podcast Studio

The podcasting landscape 2020

Podcasting has become the hot content media superstar, and even in the current state of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the industry is still experiencing overall growth, and there is even more potential in the future.  More and more independent podcasters are starting up new podcasts, and the industry is expected to surpass $1 billion in ad revenue in 2021

Why ModPod?

The ModPod Portable modular podcast studio is way to help independent podcasters in the Orlando area to improve the quality of their episodes when on-site at an event, or doing a higher profile interview where a more professional sound is desired.  Initially, this studio will be assembled semi-permanently in a yet to be determined Orlando location (potentially a local coworking space), to promote the concept and help the podcasting community to grow.

Using the studio, I will offer classes and instruction on subjects such as how to:

  •  use the gear
  • develop podcast ideas
  • work with hosting companies
  • create graphics and social media content

By providing a rentable booth with audio and environmental isolation, ModPod will be poised to take advantage of the eventual restarting of the event, conference and tradeshow industry.   For podcasters visiting Orlando, FL  or corporations and associations wanting to provide a professional, isolated environment for podcast recording at events, conferences and conventions, the ModPod concept allows for all structural components and electronic equipment to be broken down into road cases for easy transport.  Final design is still in progress, so stay tuned for updates and new images. This Kickstarter campaign will fund the last development stage and purchase of building materials and all needed gear for one portable studio.  ModPod will eventually be one rental product line offered out of PodHub Suites, a coworking concept being developed for opening in 2021.

Enter ModPod

As part of the initial PodHub Suites concept, a portable podcast booth idea was developed to service the event, conference and tradeshow industry.  Originally planned to be built and marketed as the full facility took shape, they decided to create ModPod as an independent project and launch this campaign during the PodFest Global Summit, a major podcast conference held for the first time completely online.

Once funded, the first ModPod will be built and placed in a local coworking space for continuous promotion and use.  Scott Hill will use the studio for his podcast, and others in the area have already expressed interest.  As PodHub Suites opens and grows, and as the business travel industry begins its long journey through recovery, they plan to have additional ModPod studios created for rental regionally and nationally.

Time Frame

The first ModPod will be fully built within two months once funding has been secured, although some work will likely begin by early September 2020.  Material for the structure will be custom manufactured and may take a few weeks of lead time.  A full project timeline is in development and will be updated here as more information is generated.

A planned November 2020 launch will take advantage of Orlando-based independent and corporate podcasters wishing to produce special holiday and New Year episodes.  The build will provide proof-of-concept for renting a professional podcast studio, and help to promote the PodHub Suites concept to potential investors.

Budget

The $20,000 campaign goal will fund all building materials, including the audio and video equipment listed above.  Technical gear will be high quality existing gear from manufacturers already familiar with the podcast industry.  Some sponsorship of gear will be pursued, however this campaign will ensure that all expenses are covered regardless.  The ModPod structural material and construction is being custom-designed, as existing sound isolation booth models are not designed with the podcasting experience in mind, and generally are not economically portable.

Cost Estimates include:

  • Audio Mixer/Video Switcher combo – $2,500
  • Microphones and other audio accessories – $3,000
  • Video cameras and monitors – $1,000
  • Lighting- $500
  • Laptops (PC & Mac) – $3,000
  • Structure – $3,700
  • Electrical – $800
  • Seating and accessories – $900
  • Additional acoustical treatment – $600
  • Road cases – $2,000
  • Kickstarter Fees (estimated) $1,800
