The Full Monty

Released in 1997, “The Full Monty” is a delightful, heartwarming and understated comedy about six blokes from Sheffield who decide to put on a strip show to raise some cash.  The original plan is the brainchild of Gaz, Robert Carlyle (Ravenous, Trainspotting), who is trying to raise enough money to pay his back child support so he can continue to see his son.  The movie takes place in Sheffield, England and is set against the massive unemployment and economic doldrums that struck the industrial heartland of England.  This movie features moments of genuine comedy, drama and heartbreaking revelations.  The film never loses sight of the fact that these gentleman, and by extension their city, are trying to make the best of a horrible situation as their city is slowly dying around them.  The comedic acting of Carlyle and fellow star Mark Addy (Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey), who plays Gaz’s best friend Dave, drive the movie forward.  Where Gaz is all plots and, sometimes, misplaced confidence; Dave is full of doubt and self-loathing.  Addy, Carlyle and actor Tom Wilkinson (Snowden, Michael Clayton), Gerald in the movie, all have scenes with genuine dramatic intensity and, in the case of Addy’s Dave, one particularly heartwarming moment between he and his wife.  The final scene is worth the price of admission alone as the lads go full nude, not pictured so don’t worry, so as to deliver on their promise to go the full monty as to distinguish themselves from the better looking and more accomplished Chippendale’s dancers, thus the title of the movie.  If you are looking for a fun little film that will entertain, make you laugh and, at times, tug on your heartstrings then this is the movie for you.
