MOVIE REVIEW: Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League – Cosmic Chaos

This is the first time that I’ve watched one of the Lego movies, apart from the Lego Movie, and I have to say I’m very impressed.  I know that previous movies have been released with the DC characters, and being a DC fan, they’ve gone and done a great job bringing them to the screen.

Brainiac is off in a distant galaxy collecting planets, making sure that they fit into the A to Z of planets in his collection.  When one of these planets gets damaged during the shrinking and storage he has no choice but to find another planet starting with EA and luckily he finds one.  The downside to this is that Earth’s greatest heroes are aware of his evil plans and head into space to meet him head on.  Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, and Green Lantern battle Brainiac in space and of course our heroes manage to defeat the evil mastermind.

Running back to Brainiac Prime Brainiac comes up with a plan to get Earth shrunk and in his collection.  First though he has to take out what he sees as the three strongest members of The Justice League.  As Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern head out to face him again they are transported to different eras in time.  It’s down to Flash, Batman, and Cyborg to bring them back to their rightful time and still protect the Earth from Brainiac.  The adventure begins.

I’m a fan of the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited animated series and watch a few episodes every week.  I honestly thought that these Lego versions of the Justice League would be half-hearted attempts at using up the licences to these characters.  Thankfully, while the film is aimed at the younger members of the family, there is enough there for anyone who loves the characters to enjoy the short running time.  I’m not going to tell you that this is going to have the same impact as Bad Blood, the latest Batman animated adventure, but it’s sweet, funny, and very entertaining.

The story focuses on Batman still being an outsider in the group of the Justice League, with the rest of the team playing games in the Hall of Justice, Batman is off fighting crime with Green Arrow and the Martian Manhunter.  The team tries to find ways of bringing the ever serious Batman into the fun the rest of the team has while they wait for the next villain to attack the Earth.  When Superman, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman are sent to different eras in time Batman and The Flash turn the Batmobile into the Cosmic Treadmill.  Leaving Cyborg behind to enlist the help of some of the other DC heroes to protect us from Brainiac, but the only one he can find is Supergirl, the hyperactive cheerleader.  Batman and Flash travel to prehistoric times to rescue Wonder Woman, into the times of the Pirates to rescue Green Lantern, and the distant future to rescue Superman.

The level of comedy here is enough to make any DC fan of any age laugh and just be pleasantly entertained.  Character design is in the Lego fashion, what else could you expect, but the one thing I do love about this film is the total use of the DC Universe.  Keeping the story plain and simple may be for the kids, but as a supposed adult I find it a loving story for the Universe that I love.

I’m going to go buy the discs of the other DC Comics Lego movies.  I know that I’m 40, but this brought out that little kid in me, with the heroes that I love, in a way that will win new fans.  Also I want to buy some Lego now.  There goes this weeks paycheck from Comic Crusaders.
