N2YCBD: Kiss Kiss Blam Blam – A Killer Date
Even before social distancing, dating was becoming increasingly difficult. Shows like “First Dates” take a romantic view and shows like “Naked Attraction” take the other end of the spectrum, with a variety of swipe left/swipe right dating apps as the bridge for intimacy served in a non-fulfilling fast food kind of way, presented with the best buns, if that’s your kink! Kiss Kiss, Blam Blam from Action Labs, available on Comixology takes things a little further, if that’s possible.
The book features Jill, our heroine, who is looking for her own Jack to climb hills with, to scuba dive with and watch endless amounts of garbage TV. To get there, she has to traverse the hell that is speed dating. Will Jill meet her Jack? Will hills be climbed? Are they really no pails of water involved?
The book is written by Andre Mateus, winner of Darby Pop Publishing’s second Breaking into Comics contest. If you have read my reviews previously, you know the high regard I hold Darby Pop in. Moving over to Action Lab does by no way diminish the talent on show. The various interactions are cruelly well observed, I have had a very similar Star Wars conversation with my wife! The setup is fantastic, never failing to put a smile on the readers face, whilst the punchline can be seen as a trifle absurd, it does manage to hold it’s own.
Art is provided by Rahil Moshin, a self confessed 90’s cartoon fan. It is this aesthetic that pervades both the writing and the art superbly.  Moshin’s style is reminiscent of shows like Rocko’s Modern Life. There is an angular look to Jill, I think to display her fast paced life. The suitors appearances are suitably caricature-esque, that carries its own level real life awkwardness. The colors are a bright in way that invokes the 90’s animation feel that Moshin is fond of.
If you are sat at home, daydreaming of the way that life used to be, maybe this slice of “what could almost be” in the endless search of love, should help you distance yourself from that feeling as you sit comfortably on the couch reading comics that are N2YCB’s.
