REVIEW: Abe Sapien #21

Written by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie
Illustrated by Sebastián Fiumara
Colors by Dave Stewart
Lettering by Clem Robins

So, we have an amphibious fish man, a missing girl, zombies and necromancy. That’s right, we are back in Mike Mignola’s Hellboy spin-off Abe Sapien.

This issue we see Abe’s personal quest continue, whilst events conspire around him, without his knowledge.  As mentioned at the start, there are zombies, or at least zombie types, which cause a minor threat and act as a focal point towards the end of the book, as other threads are pulled into place.

The book is written by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie, which I presume means Mignola plots and Allie scripts (my review copy doesn’t show the distinction). It’s a safe bet that Mignola wants to oversee the book and any subsequent Hellboy crossover ensuring a close knit continuity.

Art is supplied by Sebastian Fiumara and is pretty much what I have come to expect from this type of book. The art is helped by some great colours from Dave Stewart which add depth to the various characters in the book as well serving as a contrast  to Mignola’s usual art and colour style.

Some people will say that the zombie market is becoming over saturated with every publisher looking for the next Walking Dead, even to the inclusion of elements from that show (missing girl for example). With Abe Sapien, Mignola has created a world that appears familiar in both setting and character stereotype, but done so well that for the most part, you enjoy the book for what it is.

I am a long time comic book fan, being first introduced to Batman in the mid to late 70's. This led to a appreciation of classic artists like Neal Adams and Jim Aparo. Moving through the decades that followed, I have a working knowledge of a huge raft of characters with a fondness for old school characters like JSA and The Shadow

Currently reading a slew of Bat Books, enjoying a mini Marvel revival, and the host of The Definative Crusade and Outside the Panels whilst also appearing on No-Prize Podcast on the Undercover Capes Podcast Network
