Review: Adventureman #2

Adventureman #2 comes flying out of the gate with an exciting story, a great new heroine and mind-blowing, perfect artistry. The story takes place as the world of stories, Magic and heroes comes crashing into the real world of the perfectly named Claire Connell and her son Tommy.

Tommy is convinced that there is more to the mysterious book they“ve found and points out that the book lists the address for his headquarters. As bugs breach her world one time to many, Claire realizes there really is something to the mysterious book and she races across town to the headquarters. Here, much like the character of the book, she runs into Phaedra Phantom before having to fight off robotic guards in ingenious fashion.

The book uses a device we have seen elsewhere, the melding between the world of fiction and the real world slowly being peeled back as our heroine leaps into the fantastic. What sets this book apart from Tommy Taylor or any other book in which fiction crashes into the real world is the depth of the real world. Claire is surrounded by interesting characters and locales whether it“s her large cast of sisters, the officers she used to serve with, her incredibly insightful son and the city itself.

Terry Dodson“s Art and Rachel Dodson“s Inks make the city a feast of interesting people and locations that make this part of the story just as fun to look as as the more fantastic elements. Their character works, the insane amount of detail, as well as the larger panels and action sequences are endlessly interesting. This is an issue worth reading over and over again for the art alone.

Add to this that we are given an incredibly resourceful, interesting and courageous heroine in Claire. Claire clearly uses her background with the police force to assess the threats before her and make quick work of the first villains she face in the security robots. It will be a massive treat to see how Fraction has her continue to level up as she faces larger threats going forward. We need to believe that she has the ability to take down a villain as large and epic as Baron Bizarre, and a Claire clearly shows that she“s got a strategic mind.

Adventureman takes elements we have seen used before but pushes them into new directions, injects and incredible amount of joy and gives us an amazing heroine that we instantly can relate to and root for. The ending leaves us with the promise of more incredible stories to come.
