Review: Amazing Spider-Man #32

Synopsis:

This issue opens with a fire on an oil rig at the Astorania Oil Complex. Miguel O’Hara winds up as a fish out of water, or, more accurately, a man out of time. Peter Parker, meanwhile, has no idea that his future counterpart has arrived. He’s busy enjoying life at Empire State University. He’s back and it feels good. A lot of this issue is Peter in the school lounge just horsing around with his college buddies, and it’s much-needed banter. Peter Parker works best when he’s a student and we couldn’t ask for a better introduction to this issue.

The Creative Team:

Nick Spencer is crossing over the spiderman titles to great effect. We’re seeing a crisis with the future version of Spidey, while the present-day wall-crawler is content to just hang around school. I’m enjoying this issue as one that bridges two worlds and it seems like the worst danger is yet to come. We get some awesome moments with Peter and his sister Theresa. Great stuff includes the reveal of this issues villain and the motivation behind Miguels’ actions.

Patrick Gleason is brand new to the spider-verse and a welcome addition. He seems to be born to draw spiderman in the same way that Steve Ditko and John Romita were. the lanky limbs, the graceful way our hero swings through the air and engages in battle. I can’t see anyone else doing this title in the near future. I have a feeling he’ll be with this title for a long time. Highlights include the splash of Spiderman 2099 on the operating table and the splash of a certain female vigilante standing over the wall-crawler.

In Conclusion:

This issue doesn’t answer a whole lot of questions about Miguel’s mission, but it sure is a lot of fun trying to figure it all out as the heroes have their hands full with the bad guys. It’s a back to basics issue that makes us feel like Spiderman is getting it together again. We’re more than on board with finding Peter Parker doing his best to solve the crime at hand. We also feel the urgency in Spiderman 2099’s mission, which this issue seems to be setting us up for a reveal in the next issue, to be continued ***1/2 (8.8 rating)
