Review: Angel Season 11 #12

Synopsis:

It’s man eating plants vs. vampire as this issue, part 4 in the series, opens with unrelenting action. This fight is over quickly as an unexpected source rids the city of these frightful flowers. But is the battle really over? Fred/Illyria points out that something Angel has is what started this whole thing in the first place, But Angel is skeptical. This is definitely unique in the annals of comic book stories.

The Creative Team:

Corrina Bechko Takes us to another dimension of weird with this issue. What works in battle against the man eating plants is totally unexpected and a little bit crazy to comprehend yet she makes it work! Fred learns something more about her guest “host” the goddess Illyria. an important lesson in decision making. While Angel has to grapple with the fact that he had something to do with the evil that was produced. He blames himself for the damage that was caused and both Illyria and Fred assure him that it most likely wasn’t his fault, but he insists that he should have seen it coming. After the initial confrontation this story becomes one of introspection. I love it when characters are fleshed out and become more three dimensional Kudos to Bechko for bringing our heroes a little bit closer to each other through this disaster. It’s great stuff.

Geraldo Borges does a great job with this issue, both with the action scenes and the moments of calm. We can see the frustration on the characters faces through this battle. The battle itself is wild and probably wasn’t easy to render but it works quite well. His panels bring us to the forefront of this crazy nightmare and he succeeds in showing us the tension that rises. The characters faces as they grapple with what happened are very human in nature and we can see their concern both for the innocent civilians and each other as they take turns blaming themselves for what happened.

In Conclusion:

It’s a fine issue. I enjoyed it because I have never read a story with this incredible of a premise and yet see the characters as realistic people. they are simply two immortals and a human dealing with their day to day situations. It works because they give credence to their predicament. This little episode helped our characters grow and learn something more about themselves and each other. like the old cliché says: you learn something new everyday. Even if you’ve been around for a few hundred… or thousand… years. *** (7.8 rating)
