Review: Aquaman # 35

Synopsis:

Commander Urcell and Leot are swimming toward the palace and discussing the recent events that have led them to the conclusion that their King isn’t fit to rule his kingdom. They are headed right toward the rebellion and the war they have brought with them. The King must be stopped as he is power-hungry and not doing the best that he can for the Atlanteans.  A great issue that could usher in an era of peace for Atlantis, but where is Arthur Curry in all this?

The Creative Team:

Dan Abnett shows us a desperate people united to overthrow a tyrant. The Rebels are at their most desperate led by Jurok Byss. They have nothing to lose and it shows in their determination to resist the kingdom. Kadaver arrives and announces that he is now an instrument of the King. His arrival is much-needed for the kingdom as the rebels are gaining ground. I really enjoy the direction that this tale is going in. Where, however, is the protagonist of this title? Aquaman finally shows and starts a one man war on the King’s men. But they’re ready for him! This issue never slows down and gives us an Atlantis at it’s most desperate. Great stuff includes Murk’s arrival and revelation of his original plan for the former King of Atlantis and the former enemies realizing that they share a common goal.

Rocha, Henriques and Miki pour out their finest work in the crafting of this little tale. The art is superior and the undersea kingdom has never looked better. This team along with Sonny Gho bring us deep into the depths of Atlantis and the battle scenes are the pinnacle of this issue. Highlights include the opening splash with the all out battle raging between the King and the rebels. Also the splash where Aquaman first appears and subsequent battle with Kadaver and Murk.

In Conclusion:

A battle weary nation fights in revolt of its King. Their former King returns and helps to even the odds!  This issue is an all out free for all and the stakes are high as Aquaman shows his true colors and gets down and dirty with the adversaries of the Atlantean people. The final splash shows us what true grit is made of as Urcell and Leot come face to face with… to be continued. 8.7 (3.5)
