REVIEW: Avengers # 674

Synopsis:

This story opens with less than an hour before Earth collides with Counter-Earth. Our heroes are traveling through a corridor into the depths of the earth which would normally burn them but the High-Evolutionary has created it so our heroes would survive this trip. The Vision gets into an argument with Vivian because she wants to join the other Avengers and He clearly doesn’t want her to go. All the while the clock is ticking down to the final minutes of the two earths fates.

The Creative Team:

Mark Waid is confident in uniting this divergent group of characters. and the suspense begins on page one as he brings our heroes to unknown dangers ahead all the while they have to proceed slowly and yet time is running out. We see a poignant moment between the Vision and Vivian as his daughter learns something new about herself. Waid takes us on a trip which seems like there is no turning back from and he expertly guides us along as we feel the urgency in our protagonists plight. It’s great stuff!

Jesus Saiz does incredible work in this issue as he has to convey our characters with a sense of urgency and a feeling of helplessness like they’ve never known before. The opening splash page is an awesome pin-up style as Thor and Cyclops are bursting through the wall with the rest of the team waiting patiently. A great introduction to an important issue. Another great splash page is when three villains who are part man/part animal…Manimal? attack the team. One is part bull, the other part tiger and the third is part snake. they probably can’t defeat our heroes, but they can slow them down as they attempt to beat the clock and prevent the two worlds from colliding.

In Conclusion:

This is an important edition of the story as we see how far our antagonists will go to gain the upper hand. Lives do not matter, only defeating an enemy that they can’t seem to. No one wants war and sacrifices will be made in order to set things right. The conclusion to this tale will tug at your heart-strings and we grow to respect the actions taken by certain members of this team. We come down to the final seconds before collision and…To be continued! ***1/2 (8.7 rating)
