Review: Back to the Future: Tales from the Time Train #6

Synopsis:

The Brown family is on their first vacation. The family decided to pack up and travel to the Worlds Fair, but in 1939. They could have thought this journey through a little better as the Doc and his brood wind up as hostages of the Nazis. Einstein is also mistaken for a royal dog and gets mixed up with the other mutt. It’s all a huge case of mistaken identity as Doc Brown is also taken for Einstein, Albert, not the dog. Everyone is barking up the wrong tree (sorry) as the Browns try to put everything in order and take care of business.

The Creative Team:

Gale and Barber bring this tale to a rousing climax and Doc meets a historical figure that he had idolized. The issue starts with a Nazi spy leading Doc and his sons into a trap. Standers by even see the kidnapping, but they all think it’s part of the World’s fair show and the only thing they’re concerned about is the fact that the actor (Doc Brown) is playing Albert Einstein without a mustache. The Nazi spy has deduced that these characters are, indeed, time travelers. But good luck convincing the general populace of this. I enjoyed this tale a lot and I loved the tangled predicaments the writers put the Doc and his family in. It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma; but perhaps there is a key. Great stuff includes Einstein (the dog, not the scientist) rescuing Clara and an actor dressed as a superhero at the fair taking out a Nazi.

Megan Levens is the perfect artist to bring these characters to life. The slightly cartoony depictions remind us of the slight absurdity of the situation and also remind us of the cartoon series from 1991. Highlights include the actor at the worlds fair, dressed in an obvious take on Superman’s costume, taking out the main Nazi and the end splash where the time train is surging through history with depictions of its trip throughout the page.

In Conclusion:

I love me some Back to the Future comics. If you’re like me then the three movies and Cartoons weren’t enough of Back to the Future. I needed more and IDW was the right company to bring us the continued adventures of Doc Brown. This particular tale didn’t really offer much new to the whole franchise and the story was far from being the most original they could have come up with, but I loved it! What all the BTTF comics have been is a lot of fun that brings a what if quality to the franchise. This tale concludes in a satisfactory manner and I can’t wait for the next one! *** (8.3 rating)
