Review: Batgirl #34
“It’s not that I thought being Batgirl would be easy. But why does Batgirl always have to hurt the people Barbara loves.” – Barbara Gordon
Synopsis:
This issue opens with the Shark, Vulture, and Fox contemplating their latest loss. It was thought that Cormorant would silence Alejo’s Blackgate talk. But that backfired and it became part of her campaign. She nearly got elected and he lost his life. But the Fox assures the gangsters that he has enough pull in Congress to sway things their way. It’s essential for them in order to move on up to the big leagues. Will they be able to pull it off or will Batgirl discover who is behind this crime?
The Creative Team:
Mairghread Scott weaves an awesome tale of political intrigue. After we leave the rogues lair, we catch up to our heroine as she settles into another day at the office, Congresswoman Allejo’s office. An unsavory package arrives which causes panic in the office. An upset Barbara Gordon contemplates her usefulness. This issue gets more compelling as Barbara’s father, Commissioner Gordon, signs on board. Scott creates tension between father and daughter as the commissioner quips sarcastically that, unlike what she told Gotham’s voters. the Gotham Police can get the job done. The friction between Gordon and the Congresswoman keeps us turning the pages and makes for a compelling read. Since Barbara volunteers for the congresswoman that leads to friction between father and daughter which escalates into a torrid conflict. The action quickly picks up as Barbara turns into Batgirl and is hot on the outlaw’s trail. Great stuff includes her male companion Jason going to her apartment only to find that she’s about to be evicted. Also the showdown between Batgirl and the outlaws.
Paul Pelletier and Norm Rapmund find their stride as they create believable anthropomorphic characters without making them look silly. The three gangsters strike fear in the hearts of Gothamites and are quite scary in the process. The way Batgirl is drawn is typically athletic and looks good on the pages in between. Highlights include the splash of Batgirl staring at the clock tower and the final splash leading us into the next chapter.
In Conclusion:
This is the first part of what promises to be a three-part tale of corruption and greed. The underworld is trying to manipulate the political structure of Gotham city and Batgirl is the only one standing in their way. She on the trail of the ones who have been threatening the congresswoman, but at what cost? She winds up in a tight predicament that looks… to be continued. ***1/2 (8.3 rating)
