REVIEW: Batman Annual #3

“Whatever you need, I’m right here.” – Alfred Pennyworth.

Synopsis:

The relationship between the Dark Knight and his butler is the theme for this issue. The story opens with the death of Thomas and Martha Wayne, only this time it’s from the point of view of Alfred Pennyworth. There’s also a new villain called “The Drone” to give our super sleuth a run for his money. This villain is seeking revenge on his former employers for his own twisted reasons. Batman is diverting one of the drones away from populated areas and Alfred is giving our hero an earful trying to get him to come in for the evening since he’s got the flu.

The Creative Team:

Tom Taylor keeps the worlds greatest detective as driven as ever, this gives Alfred an obviously stress filled evening as he continues to worry about his boss, whom he loves as he would a son. It’s an awesome opening scene as we learn more about the relationship between the caped crusader and his number one employee, which is the real heart of this tale. It’s so obvious that Bruce would not be able to function without the talent and dedication of Alfred. He’s almost as important as Batman himself in the solving of crimes. I really enjoyed the banter between these two at the beginning of this issue. Great stuff includes Alfred’s assessment of how Bruce Wayne sees the Batman’s responsibility and the Drone’s motivation.

Otto Schmidt keeps the proceedings as sharp as ever. The action scenes jump out at you as they should and keep you turning every page until the very end. It’s also nice to see Alfred in a few action scenes, we don’t usually get that in most Batman comics. These panels are as exciting and fresh as the Batman scenes. Highlights include the Batman taking out the drones and Alfred’s action scene.

In Conclusion:

It’s a special day at Wayne Manor. When Bruce decides that he must take Alfred’s interests into consideration. Batman has bitten off a little more than he can chew and Alfred needs more help than usual to look after his employer. We see the true extent of Alfred’s concern by the end of this issue and it’s an excellent moment. One that defines family more than most issues of this type do. All in all, a totally satisfying issue. ****1/2 (9.8 rating)
