REVIEW: BATWOMAN #10
Synopsis:
This issue opens with the Batwoman, transformed, engaged in battle with Scarecrow. It’s scary stuff as Kate educates the scarecrow on the difference between her and Batman…Batman would never kill…but I…I… a great moment as she doesn’t finish the sentence and gains the results she’s looking for. With the Scarecrow involved we’re never sure if this is an illusion or reality. The opening scene is intense and this issue is great stuff!
The Creative Team:
Marguerite Bennett has kick started this issue in top form. Batwoman and Prime don’t see eye to eye on the aforementioned events creating some good conflict and tension between the characters. She keeps us guessing through this issue, what parts of Scarecrows attack were illusion and what parts are real? With good Scarecrow writing you have to keep the reader guessing at all times what the truth is. Bennett succeeds in keeping us glued to each page. I loved the outcome of this story, it wasn’t what I was expecting. no spoilers here, suffice to say that it involves someone dear to Kate.
Blanco and Laming are a great team and they succeed pretty well with this issue. The broken panels as Batwoman confronts Commander Kane are a nice touch and the opening splash with the transformed Batwoman is intense and scary and compliment Bennett’s writing in a superior way. The splash when Commander Kane enters is also a nice touch, he enters slow but sure. A confident leader and the artists are savvy to what makes his entrance on the scene work. Fernando and Marc know when to inject an action packed opening and when to keep it subtle.
In Conclusion:
The ultimate goal in this issue is not just to take down the Scarecrow, it’s to see how this battle has affected Kate’s mind. In a good scarecrow story, the protagonist leaves with a little bit of her (his) soul taken from them. Dr. Jonathan Crane is almost the Dr. Hannibal Lecter of the DC universe (without the cannibalism) His powers of illusion aren’t just for trickery but for getting into the minds of his victims and Kate will realize that not everything was an illusion, a great issue and I enjoyed it a lot. ***1/2 (8.6 rating)
