Review: Black Cat # 6

Synopsis:

This issue opens with Felicia Hardy admiring herself in a full-length mirror, she“s getting ready for a date! Here we see the human side of this cat burglar. She and one Georges Batroc are out to dinner and engage in some playful banter. Their banter, however, goes beyond idle chit-chat and keeps us reading as we are amused at the exploits of each!

The Creative Team:

Jed MacKay decided to give Felicia the night off and show us a slice of life issue which gives us some insight as to what makes Felicia tick. MacKay“s clever writing keeps us interested even with the absence of action. I“m enjoying this read, even though I feel like I“m picking up a Jack Kirby True Romance title from the late “60s or early “70s. That“s not to say that the entire issue is all dinner chatter, the excitement picks up when the slightly buzzed couple decides to climb the rooftops of New York in search of adventure. Great stuff includes Georges“ insistence at being known of as Batroc (an homage to another rival comic book company, perhaps?) and the loot that this dynamic duo winds up with.

Mike Dowling gives us a great look at the big apple as his best panels show this couple swinging through the concrete jungle with the greatest of ease. He shows us a couple on a date with an ulterior motive. As if these two can“t get together without doing something mischievous. Highlights include Batroc“s flashback to a fight with Ninja“s and the page that shows our anti-heroes leaping into action from the rooftops of New York.

In Conclusion:

For those who think that Felicia Hardy is only Selina Kyle lite, this title shows us a bit more of the feline personality which is quite different than anything we“ve seen in Selina. This Black Cat is clearly not just a knock off of the Cat as her personality gets fleshed out a little more in this tale. However, it“s not all fun and games as we reach the end of this issue and discover”¦to be continued! ***1/2 (8.7)
