REVIEW: BLACK PANTHER: WORLD OF WAKANDA #2

It often happens that spin-off books deliver interesting but uneventful and ultimately forgettable stories. This however immerses you in a world you didn’t know you needed dunking in. It’s the story of the Dora Milaje, T’Challa’s elite, all female guard, specifically Ayo and Captain Aneka and their opposing views coming together to…well I’m not going to spoil it for you.

If there’s one thing wrong with the plot it’s that it takes place in the gaps between Infinity and Secret War so it does feel a bit like gravy trickling between the meat of a bigger story so it falls back on building the two leads and the surrounding mythology which thanks to the consultant feels authentic. It leads nicely into its own story though judging by the end.

The art is a little flat but detail and design come through well. There’s some subtle work with emotions and body language which work beautifully for the story. I could do with a bit more of Wakanda, cityscapes and sweeping vistas and the like, but as its issue #2 Martinez may have got it out of their system in the last issue.

This is a great spin-off, and a great glimpse into a world I’m growing quite partial to. 4.8/5
