REVIEW: Bloodshot Rising Spirit #3

  • Project Rising Spirit was a pioneer in advanced weaponry and scientific innovation. Their crowning achievement was Bloodshot, a nanite-enhanced super soldier.  ”“ turning him into the perfect soldier at the cost of erasing his past.
  •  Kevin Grevioux (Underworld) and Ken Lashley (Black Panther) delve into the violent subconscious of Valiant’s living weapon of war!

Bloodshot Rising Spirit #3 starts out with yet another identity having been implanted into Bloodshot.  At 2140 on the night of 15 February 1898, the USS Maine ship experienced an explosion that tore the bow off the hull, in Havana Harbor, Havana, Cuba, and till this day remains scuttled in the Strait of Florida.  Of the 350 officers and men on board, 252 died in the explosion.  Although the sinking was not officially cited as a reason for the US declaration of war against Spain in April 1898, it certainly laid the groundwork.  Yellow journalism (The fake news of its’ day), led by William Randolph Hearst of the New York Journal and Joseph Pulitzer of the New York World, inflamed American passions with slogans like “Remember the Maine! To Hell with Spain!”“. In Bloodshot Rising Spirit #3, as far as Bloodshot is concerned he was part of it due to the false memories that Bloodshot“s handlers have attempted to implant into his mind.

The Anchor continues to be the art.  Artistically, the comic is solid. The art by , Ken Lashley as always, is stellar. He has a real talent for shading and action expression,

Bloodshot Rising Spirit #3. doesn’t go very deep. Consequently, it ,misses opportunities to make a historical comparison to the present day social political landscape, which should have been easy due to the connotations surround the USS Maine as the center of Gravity for its narrative.  Instead comparisons to the film Inception will be inescapable. I understand why Valiant feels the need to revisit the character“s origin with a movie scheduled to hit theaters sometime in 2020, that may me feeling the need to give Bloodshot more cinematic worthy depth for those initiated to Bloodshot.
