Review: Blossoms 666 #2

Are you like me and love Archie Horror? Asking because this new little title for the little spin-off of main Archie continuity is exactly what I needed. I adore the dark bits of the Archie universe, some of which we got to see in the new Netflix Sabrina adaptation. Still, finally seeing Cheryl and Jason get in on the action really brings a smile to my face. This awesome little title is written by Cullen Bunn with absolutely beautiful art by Laura Braga of Catwoman fame. The beautiful red color palette, which echoes much of the Blossoms’ theme is by Matt Herms and letters by Jack Morelli.

I’ll admit that it’s hard to really impress me, but this title managed to give me chills upon its closing. We start the day after a rather large party at the Blossoms’ mansion where Jason and Cheryl share a somewhat tense little interaction full of semi-playful on the verge of threat type banter. Only to find out a few pages after that two of Riverdale High’s students have seemingly gone missing. Dilton, one of the other students at the high school, seems to be very concerned and nervous about this news. Enough so that Betty Cooper confronts him about what might be going on and offers to help, which of course he refuses.

Alternatively, Cheryl and Jason seem content to act as if they have no clue what might have happened to Muggs and Mantle, going even as far as to name another classmate who might be somehow involved with Mantle’s disappearance in some way. The twins seem too content to let their focus fall on Betty Cooper, who they deem important enough in their quest for the Infernal Throne, to garner their full attention. It seems Betty has made enough of a spectacle of herself because of her prying into affairs that might involve them.

Both twins are startled by the appearance of another character, one of which might turn the tides for everyone involved in the struggle for the throne. It’s a twist that I wasn’t expecting, given that I’d not remembered or known of this character (if he’s not just a new one) so I was utterly shocked by the entire thing.

I’d really suggest this title, based on just the banter between the twins alone, to anyone who is a fan of Archie works, or even the tv show itself. Especially if you liked the Chilling Tales Netflix stuff since it will sate your supernatural palette with this 4 out of 5 star read.
