Review: BSG vs BSG #2
And the winner for the category of “Comic Book Title Without a Vowel”, goes to…..
As we left the Battlestar’s last issue, things were shaping up quite nicely, there were the two universes and the two Galactica’s. When it comes to sci-fi the shortest point between two points isn’t a straight line, its a wormhole and quicker than you can say “Wait, this isn’t DS9!” the two great warships are on a collision course, literally!
This issue is the unenviable “talking exposition” issue, with the differences in the universes, characters, language, and even Cylon origins all getting a run out. Thankfully, thanks to Cain and the First Cylon the story does get back on track, slightly. Peter David takes the brave choice of addressing loads of comparatives, some of which are funny, some of which you expect. Whilst I respect David for all his great work in the past, I would possibly question the need to explain everything as info dumps can be hard work to plough through. It also runs the risk of emptying the tanks for later story elements. Whilst the ships of the series are the Galactica’s, both still looking classy by the way, I would also like to see the two Rising Stars appear. David pays some fan service to the late Richard Hatch, which I found to be quite touching.
Books based on film and TV shows need to have art to show some familiarity to the source material. Johnny Desjardins unfortunately has more mis-fires than Jolley’s viper trying to leave a launch tube. Whilst the ships look great, the characters go through a number of changes across the board. For example I only recognise old school Adama because he has white hair, old school Apollo because he is left handed and please do not get me started on Laura Roslin; I am not sure why there was a need to dramatically de age her and put her in a mini skirt. I am also not a big fan of the Liefeld inspired line work. Desjardins does manage to pull off a good Tom Zarek, which makes that element impactful at least. The colors by Mohan are effective, if a tad too bright as both shows do have a dark color base.
Even with the info dump, I am still interested in how this series goes, especially when you consider that both fleets did manage to find an Earth far from the Twelve Colonies of Man they separately called home.
