REVIEW: BUBBA HO-TEP AND THE COSMIC BLOOD-SUCKERS #2

Synopsis:
The King and his motley crew of Zombie Hunters arrive at their new base of operations. An old dilapidated mansion, kind of the poor mans Graceland. Elvis settles in to his new bedroom for the night and is visited by Jenny, or something, and she’s apparently a big fan because she has no clothes on. Then we cut to breakfast. All of this is set up so we can learn more about the house, which is haunted, and its original inhabitants. Looking at the King and his wannabe zombie hunters, we get the feeling that these aren’t so much Rock and Roll celebrities but greasy red necks who couldn’t hunt burnt toast, let alone the living dead. If these characters had been on The Walking Dead, it would have ended after half a season, not due to poor ratings, but because we would doubt their survival. They look about as competent as Mr. Furious was in protecting Captain Amazing.
The Creative Team:
Joshua Jabcuga has crafted an extraordinary background story for our teams new headquarters, which happens to be haunted. The lady that visited Elvis in the night wasn’t tangible yet she was looking for love none the less, Col. Tom Parker explains that it is possible for her to become tangible under intense circumstances. Great stuff includes the surreal trip our gang must take in order to figure out the mystery of their hell house and Elvis disobeying the Col. which he was incapable of doing in real life.
Tadd Galusha is having his usual fun combining the birth of Rock and Roll with an old eerie comics feel. The look is truly original and his creatures in the surreal dimension are a whole lot of fun. His Elvis is spot on. Which is important in depicting an actual historical figure. Highlights include the vampire performing…let’s just say performing, on the truck driver and the demon in the junkyard.
In Conclusion:
We learn a lot about Elvis and his goons also their mission. What we don’t know is if these misfits thrown together can actually do the job. Think Mystery Men, or the Inferior 5. A bloated Col. Tom Parker spells it out for them, but they have no clue as to what to do. Their foray into the other dimension shows us everything we need to know about these incompetents. This issue is more expositional than the previous one, but the creative team has fun telling it and it’s clearly worth a chuckle or two. The set up promises more great stuff in the coming issues. I really love a good spoof and this is one of the best I’ve read in years! *** (8.7 rating)
