Review: Captain America #702

Synopsis:

In the near future, our government has found a way to extract the Super-Soldier serum from the deceased Steve Rogers and use it to enhance human beings into a healthier, utopian society. However, Steve Rogers descendant, State Historian Jack Rogers, discovered that when his son was treated with the formula, it made him sick. The government has refused to release information to him that could tell him why. Jack then broke into the White House and discovered the shocking truth. The serum is turning human beings into sleeper agents for the Kree empire. He is now a fugitive along with his son.

The Creative Team:

Mark Waid opens this issue in France, 1943. The French resistance finds a wounded Captain America and fights to bring him to safety. Then we leap to New Washington in the 24th Century. Jack Rogers sees wanted posters with his name on it. As a Government official, he knows something about hiding from the agents who are looking for him, but by his own admission, he won’t be able to keep dodging them for long. He has to find refuge. This tale has all the earmarks of a great spy thriller and shows us something new about the Captain America Mythos. Great stuff includes Jack discovering something he didn’t know about his father and the return of an old villain.

Romero, Reis and Chaykin know the good Captain quite well. They bring his sons story to an artistic high and they help to capture the spirit of the story in a kind of abstract way. Highlights include the splash that shows Captain America in action in the 1940’s and the splash that brings back an old villain to haunt the son of the original Avenger.

In Conclusion:

I love a good mystery and this one shows us a twist that most wouldn’t have expected. It keeps us guessing right up until the last page when Jack Rogers finds an important relic from his father’s era. But with the discovery comes…to be continued. ***1/2 (8.2 rating)
