Review: Catwoman #1
By now you should know all about the bat-nuptials and the aftermath. If not, I suggest you go pick up Batman #50.
Catwoman is in the news, again. This time carrying a gun and shooting a couple of people. The eagle-eyed among you will realise that the gun tooting Cat person isn’t our Selina. Our Selina is currently cooling her paws outside of Gotham where she is trying to stay incognito. That’s only until the news of the copy-cats hits her ears and a certain package is returned to her from the ever faithful Pennyworth, sends her to the rooftops once more, in a new slightly adjusted outfit.
Joelle Jones, whose work can be seen in her own creation Lady Killer and in recent DC books such as Supergirl: Being Super and issues of Batman, is the writer and artist of this new version of an old idea. That may sound harsh, but this isn’t the first time Catwoman has had her own book, although the last time things weren’t so well received. Jones has a skill of creating strong female characters, so seems like a perfect choice for one of DC’s most recognisable female characters. Previously, known more of an artist, Jones writing has been coming on in leaps and bounds; there are some lovely little nuances in play throughout the script and it is good to see cats around Selina again.
With her artistic history, the book should look great, right? The art in the book is a little more scratchy than I had expected, if I am honest. Previously, there had been a smoothness to Jones work that seems a little laboured here. It could be that with a character like Selina, there comes a certain expectation. That said of course, the previous run had curves to the point that it seems that Selina always had a broken back. Jones art is certainly more elegant, than previous artistic ventures. As this is Jones, and I am a huge fan, I am keeping an open mind. One thing for certain, with Jones comes along colorist of choice Laura Allred, who gives the book a darkness that seems to match Selina’s soul, at least at the moment.
The book’s main idea is quite simple, there are copycats of all shapes and sizes and a new big bad that seems to have a hate on for everyone’s favourite feline of felony. This book is a bit of a break from the norm. Hopefully, the talent of Joelle Jones will finally give Catwoman the book of quality that she deserves.
