Review: Curse Words #18
Previously in Curse Words, Jacques Zacques had been confronted by Mr. Opaque. Opaque, having sought out Jacques, taught vital lessons to Zacques on the nature of magic. These lessons were provided so that the two of them might ally together in an effort to take down Wizord and his ex-girlfriend Ruby Stitch. Meanwhile, Margaret was in the process of cat-fishing her intended paramour in Australia. Finally, Wizord and Ruby enjoyed a reality show courtesy of the magic world created and encapsulated in a bottle by Wizord.
Curse Words #18 opens with Wizord and Ruby asleep on the couch as their ‘reality show’ of choice is magically projected onto the wall opposite them. Margaret watches them before attempting to wake Wizord. Unbeknownst to Wizord, she has arranged to meet her intended and wants him to change her into a more suitable form. Wizord demurs but eventually relents when Margaret reminds him that he would be dead if she had not aided him. The two then go through a series of comical magical transformations. Margaret nearly settles on a reptilian form before Wizord transforms her into a bipedal Koala. She is delighted with this new form.
Meanwhile, in France, Jacques and Opaque have arrived in Paris and Jacques glories in the majesty of the Arc de Triomphe as he plots to kill Wizord. Opaque reminds him of the lessons he taught him in the previous issue, namely that he needs magical allies to aid him in taking down the powerful Wizord. Jacques agrees, summoning a magical guide to help him locate allies that he can persuade to his cause. 
The rest of the issue, the two travel the world searching for allies who hate Wizord as much as they do. Finally, Jacques magically enhances those allies as he and his new army prepare to go to war with Wizord and Ruby.
Margaret, having used a picture of Candace to catfish her intended in Australia, tries to convince Candace to accompany her to Australia so she can meet her love. Candace scolds Margaret over her actions and intends to leave. Not to be deterred, Margaret has guards seize Candace as she prepares to travel to Australia for her ‘date’.
This is yet another entertaining issue of Curse Words. The writing is fun and compelling without taking itself too seriously. Jacques Zacques’ quest to assemble a magical ‘A-Team’ of villians is classic comic book master mind and thoroughly delightful to read. Meanwhile, the rekindling of the romance between Ruby and Wizord is intriguing as the catfish romance of Margaret promises cringe-worthy moments going forward. The artwork is impeccable as usual. Drawn with an exaggerated style, the art brings to life this fantastical tale while granting it a sense of whimsy that keeps the book light and amusing. The colors complement the artwork, bringing this magical world to life while providing depth to the characters and the powers they wield. In short, this is another fine installment and one I heartily recommend.
