Review: CURSE WORDS HOLIDAY SPECIAL #1

Somehow it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Hole World has its own winter holiday. And yet it does. Merry Meetmeat everyone!

Charles Soules and Ryan Browne take us into the past for this holiday-themed, one-shot that takes a look at the court of Sizzajee at the height of his decadent power. It is Meetmeat, the winter festival where the rulers of Hole World gather under one roof to create and hunt the holiday feast.  Wizzord and Ruby Stitch are there to celebrate and connive their way further up the rungs of power as is the rest of the court. This is before their romance, so Margaret fans are out of luck.

Since Sizzajee“s court runs solely on power and favoritism, all the rivals have to be careful in how they jump over each other. Everyone, but Wizzord that is. He is confident in his power and position and can afford to mock the other rivals. It also makes him the biggest target during the festive traditions.

Soule has a lot of fun showering the seeds of how we came to the current story lines and it is a fun book showing the strange and amazing environment of the Hole World. This is an entertaining and engaging story for the readers of his book. There are a lot of little payoffs, but I doubt that this is a book that someone picking up the title or the first time would get them.

Mike Norton does a great job of dropping in for Browne to do the art for this one-shot. He clearly has a real grasp of the characters and this universe and drops in a lot of fantastic detail work, like the fairy lights made out of real fairies and Sizzajee“s ugly holiday sweater.

While, nothing in this book is likely to impact the main story lines, it is a fun read. It manages to fill in a lot of holes that readers may have had about Sizzajee“s court and how the rivalries got started. It is also fun to see how important the courtiers see themselves before Sizzajee makes sure each of them know they are under his thumb. Hope you don“t name your main course Jane.
