REVIEW: Cyborg #23

Synopsis:

Marv Wolfman never disappoints. I have been reading his comics since the Tomb of Dracula and he has never put out a bad comic book in my view (at least that I’ve read.) And his winning streak continues with this title. He opens the chapter with our hero strapped to a bunch of wires and he’s about to be torn asunder by a group of scientists including his father!

The Creative Team

Marv Wolfman’s creative juices are as strong as ever and he brings an intensity to this title that heightens the mystery to the nth degree! The Wolfman brings our hero to a perplexing crossroads as he’s trying to discover just who has been tweaking his cybernetics. In his search he calls Kate looking for his father, but Kate informs Victor that his dad is at S.T.A.R. labs. Cyborg knows that Kate’s lying and he doesn’t understand why his dad doesn’t want to talk to him. Great stuff includes Cyborg going hand to hand in combat with Marcia Davies while she’s wearing her tech suit. Also Cyborg confronting Kate about S.T.A.R. labs and their dirty little secrets, including the whereabouts of his father.

Tom Derenick gives Marv Wolfman’s words a much needed edge art wise. His players have the determination in their features you would expect from this tale of family issues gone wrong. His no nonsense grim characters mean business and they’re all brought to the brink. Even as we wonder why Silas doesn’t want to talk to his son, even after we realize that Victor obviously knows that Silas is in the next room and Silas knows that he knows. Highlights include the fight scene between the Master and Bunta also the climactic fight scene involving our erstwhile protagonist.

In Conclusion:

This is the issue that we learn who wants Cyborg and why. It’s a very satisfactory tale about family strife between different families and the lengths people will go to in order to survive. We learn who want’s Cyborg’s technology and it’s for a good reason, but the means do not justify the ends. I really enjoyed how this comic book played out and you have to have a certain sympathy for the antagonist in this tale. Highly recommended! **** (8.7 rating)
