Review: Dark Knights Death Metal #6
Welcome to the ultimate battle for the soul of the DC Multiverse. With Dark Knights: Death Metal #6 our heroes embrace all aspects of their history, their heroic families and their multiverse. This issue represents a formal shift of the DC books accepting all of their great stories as vital parts of a grand tapestry. It’s also is a great team up with Wonder Woman and Lobo, which was a duo we should have known would be fantastic.
At a time where too many of us have not been able to see superheroes on the big screen, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo give us just that. They remind us that great comics have no limits on the scope of heroes, villains and their battles. The Man Who Laughs has been cosmically powered and battles Perpetua as Wonder Woman and Lobo work to get the journal to the Forge to release the knowledge of the DC Multiverse to all.
Interspersed with these duos is a massive battle between the pantheon of DC heroes against the massive army of villains from multiple Dark Earths. Capullo uses every trick and creates some new ones to create panoramic battle scenes and showcase the full breadth of what he and Snyder have created in their books. Then, as Wonder Woman is aided by Darkseid to release the knowledge of all of DC history the heroes bind together and Diana harnesses the power becoming a cosmic being ready for battle.
The Death Metal books have always been at heart about character interactions and this issue showcases exactly how much heart Snyder and Capullo put in their books. Not only do we get to see a softer side of Batman, but we get to see Wonder Woman and Lobo work off each other so well that one wants and entire other series with them.
This issue is paced to allow the battles to breathe and the conflicts to build. The big screen style hides a story full of heart and heroism. We still get enormous action scenes but we hold onto the character moments as we get an epic Wonder Woman story against the backdrop of realities torn asunder.
