REVIEW: Dark Spaces: Good Deeds #1

Dark Spaces: Good Deeds is the next story in the Scott Snyder universe, this time told by Che Grayson for IDW. You might recognize the name Che as she has written for DC Comics working on Batman: Urban Legends and Legends of the Dark Knight. She has also written for Image Comics with Bitch Planet, and self published titles The Wild Seed and Rigamo.

You might of also seen her TED Talks titled the Super Hero we Need. http://chegrayson.com/ted-talk/

This story follows two main characters. First we meet Jean McKnight. Jean is a reporter that has lost her way after writing a piece that ended up not being so true which has caused her to not be the first choice for reporting on what Jean would consider more important topics to cover. She meets with her publisher who has provided the opportunity to write on the 450th anniversary of the city St. Augustine Florida. In Jean’s mind this is nothing but a puff piece. The same type of opportunities she has been given since she wrote the piece that ended up not being so true.

In St. Augustine we meet the second main character Cheyenne Rite, a young high school student who has just moved to St. Augustine. Cheyenne’s first day of school has not gone as hoped. It is here she meets Jean for the first time. There is a bonding moment that seems important as this story continues. These two characters seem to play an important role moving forward.

This is a thriller-horror with several twist so you will want to pick up Good Deeds to fill in the gaps. The writing is superb and really does a fantastic job in building to the last few pages. The pacing is excellent and the art is great.

Good Deeds is available May 17th and has three main covers not including retailer incentive covers, seven in all.
