Review: Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe Again #1

Marvel lets the Merc with a Mouth fly off the handle once again as he shoots and slashes his way through a smorgasbord of heroes in Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe Again Issue 1, (Written by Cullen Bunn, Art by Dalibor Talajic).  This new story promises to pit Deadpool against most of the characters you know and love, while providing the wisecracking hijinks you have come to expect from him.  Well”¦.almost.

Marvel is up against a double-edged sword these days with Deadpool.  The problem, in my opinion, is that he now appears far too tame in the comic books since his debut on the silver screen.  The movie was spectacular. It gave fans more than we could have ever hoped for in a movie about him. Since then, the comics have come across as a poor imitation.  I understand the books have to be taken down to at least a PG-13 rating, but since we“ve seen him unleashed in all his glory, I feel like he is being muzzled.
Writer, Cullen Bunn uses this first issue to lay groundwork for the upcoming carnage that will take place.  As the story unfolds, we discover why Deadpool is cleaning the floor with some of the universes most recognizable names, and who is pulling the strings behind the curtain. The names of heroes fallen, is only dwarfed by the names of heroes still to battle. I don“t write spoilers, but if you“re a fan of the Marvel Universe, this offers to play out like one of the old “What If”¦”“ books.

Dalibor Talajic provides his usual solid comic art.  Along with his team, Goran Sudzuka (inker) and Miroslav Mrva (Colorist) Talajic sets the mood as if we“re witness to a dark police crime drama.  The exception to this is a two-page spread halfway through the story that comes across as very cartoonish.  I can understand the reason for the transition, as Deadpool is making mincemeat of his team because he is being controlled by outside forces.  Even with this understanding, it seems unnecessary.

If you are a fan of recent Deadpool comics, I“m sure you“ll be pleased with this issue.  The tease we“re left with at the end does provide some tantalizing intrigue.  As I finished the book I was left with a familiar feeling. I thought if only he had not already killed the Marvel universe once before, then threatened to come after all of us, there may be a bit more sizzle for this series.
