Review: Deathstroke V Batman # 32
Synopsis:
This issue opens with Robin contemplating what it means to be a ward of…Deathstroke? This entire story has questioned the relationship between the three. Deathstroke denies being Robin’s father while Batman questions his parentage. This makes for some great dramatic tension. A neat subplot to an already great story. Then we jump into action as Deathstroke and Batman are taking on an 82-year-old Ace Masterson A.K.A. the Human Dynamo. Though this is no ordinary old man. He’s super powered and ready for action!
The Creative Team:
Priest wastes no time bringing us into the action on this chapter of the story. It’s an awesome issue as the fight with Human Dynamo takes center stage then we see our anti-hero discussing relationships with Talia Al Ghul. Some truths are revealed about a romantic encounter in question which only ups the ante and only deepens the mystery as to who Damian’s father really is. Priest knows how to push the right buttons to keep us hanging and guessing. The suspense by this issue is killing us. Is he or isn’t he? Even when the question takes a back seat to the story it’s still what’s on everyone’s mind. Great stuff includes Talia’s conversation with Wade Wilson and the ultimate confrontation between Batman and Deathstroke.
Carlo Pagulayan, Roberto Viacara, Larry Hama and Jason Paz continue to bring their undeniable artistic expression to this title and they are becoming more comfortable with this adaptation as each issue passes by. I really enjoyed the brief look at the Human Dynamo’s own superhero team: The Justice Experience and the emotional range of our protagonists as more truths are revealed in this issue is a joy. Highlights include the fight between Batman, Deathstroke and the Human Dynamo. Also, the opening splash introducing all of the main characters in an awesome action scene.
In Conclusion:
Each issue gets better and better as we discover something new, yet with each discovery it brings about more questions that need to be answered. The connection between Damian and Bruce gets more tense and we realize that there are two Robins in on the whole who’s who in the Wayne universe which is being threatened. The already fragile relationship between father and son is wearing thinner. Excellent writing, great art and a superb story all around. Just when you didn’t think things could get any weirder than they already are…to be continued. ****1/2 (8.8 rating)
