Review: Descender #32

Since the first issue of Descender in the winter of 2015, the people of the United Galactic Worlds have feared the return of the Harvesters. The Harvesters decimated the worlds ten years prior to the stat of the story. Blaming their own machines for the Harvester threat, robots were outlawed and destroyed wherever they were found. Surviving robots and people have been hunting Tim-21 and his pals as they run across the universe, trying to stay ahead of all the threats.

Now, as Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen bring the story to a close, the Harvesters have returned and all of the beings of the Galactic Council are under the threat of their judgement. The question of who will survive their judgement and how they survive is the focus of this final issue.

As for Tim-21 himself, The Harvesters find his humanity, that which separated him from other robots as a flaw in his programming. Can Tim convince them to let him keep his humanity no matter how much they want to reprogram him?

Lemire and Nguyen have been routinely putting out an incredible story for three years. For the most part the story has been pure science fiction, but lately there have been strains of fantasy that have crept in. Even as they close this story they lay the seeds for the follow-up book which looks to be more pure fantasy than science fiction and looks to rebuild civilizations from the ashes of what the Harvesters do.

Nguyen“s watercolor style have been part of the part of the charm of the series during the entire run and he doesn“t disappoint in this final issue. It is a style that I have often found lacking in emotional depth, but in Nguyen“s hands, he has proven this wrong.

This series has been a real roller coaster with a number of unseen twists like Lemire is a master at introducing. If you“ve given up on the series, I hope these last couple issues have inspired you to go and pick up the back issues or at the very least buy the trades.
