Review: Despicable Deadpool 298

“MMPHFUGHEMPH” – Deadpool.

Synopsis:

Deadpool is having fun by putting a hit out, for 20 million dollars, on his own head. different characters from the Marvel universe are trying to collect. the first character that tries to collect in this issue is Juggernaut and Wade Wilson teases him by giving him a head but! Our fourth wall breaking anti-hero knows his own limitations…and he has none! It’s great to see a Marvel comic that knows how to have fun again!

The Creative Team:

Gerry Duggan  brings a certain sarcastic irony to this issue. If anyone were ever to kill Deadpool, how would they collect the 20 million dollars anyway? Does Wade Wilson even have 20 million dollars to give the winner if it were possible to kill and collect? Probably not. But that doesn’t prevent the more dim-witted drones in the Marvel Universe from trying. Taskmaster shows up and brags about collecting the 10 million dollar reward and Deadpool has to correct him on the amount, it’s 20 million Great stuff includes Deadpools taunts of his tormentors and the clever way Bullseye has to try to kill Mr. Wilson. I loved this issue and got a good chuckle from it, but I’m sure the big laughs will be coming in the 300th anniversary issue.

I love a good send up; Naked Gun, Hot Shot’s, Scary Movie. Great film makers Like the Zucker’s Abraham’s and Wayans’s know that the sarcasm works best when you are also paying a loving homage to the source material. In the world of comics Mike Hawthorne and Terry Pallot understand that a good parody doesn’t’ play it for laughs, they play it straight. Their art isn’t the slightest bit cartoony but just as serious as it would be in any title they might work on. And it works so well with Deadpool, who is almost a send up of the entire superhero genre. Highlights in this issue include the aforementioned head but with Juggernaut and Deadpool using a man in a wheel chair as a weapon.

In Conclusion:

Deadpool, though a regular character in the Marvel Universe, is almost a send up of the whole super hero genre. Oh, he isn’t an obvious send up like the Impossible man, but rather a subtle send up. He looks like a Marvel superhero, talks like a Marvel superhero and acts like a Marvel superhero, but, of course, he’s different. He belongs, but he doesn’t. And his stories in the right hands are always fun and this one is no exception. I love the tongue in cheek aspect of Wade Wilson’s career and can’t wait for the next issue. ***1/2 (8.5 rating.)
